Traveling on the Epson Tour gives players the opportunity to see the United States and visit places they’ve never been. International players, like Abegail Arevalo (Philippines), also get to find hidden gems in the states. This week’s stop in El Dorado, Arkansas offers more to the players than meets the eye. On the surface, El Dorado is a small town with a beautiful golf course. Arevalo dug a little deeper while at the Murphy USA El Dorado Shootout and found a mom-and-pop donut shop called Spudnuts.
“I love trying out foods I’ve never had before,” said Arevalo. “Especially when we’re traveling everywhere. I like to check out what they have in the area and take notes for my personal use for next year. I’m the biggest foodie.”
Arevalo has had donuts before, but not Spudnuts. These pastries include potato flour, setting them apart from ordinary donuts.
“This is the first time [trying donuts on the road],” said Arevalo. “So, I’m intrigued. I’m not usually excited about donuts, but I heard this one is special.”
The small store has a vintage and nostalgic feel, transporting guests back in time to the mid 1900s. There are a few tables inside, providing a more intimate experience for guests to enjoy their treats. Each day the shop closes by noon, making it a true breakfast stop.
“The store looks like it’s been here for a while,” said Arevalo. “They’re legit and they’re local. That’s the kind of places I like going to.”
After taste-testing the two Spudnuts available – glazed and chocolate – Arevalo rated them. The chocolate Spudnut won her heart, but she was overall pleased with both options.
“The chocolate one was a 9.2 [out of 10],” said Arevalo. “It’s not overwhelmingly sweet, it’s just amazing. The regular Spudnut was an 8.5. Anything over an eight means I would line up for it and crave for it.”
Arevalo backed up her ratings by saying she would wait 45 minutes to an hour for these donuts. She also encourages everyone to head over and try them.
