Gigi Stoll (Oregon) tops the first-round leaderboard at the Four Winds Invitational, opening with a 6-under-par 66. After carding seven birdies on Friday, the 2018 National Championship team member at the University of Arizona holds a one-stroke advantage over seven players in a tie for second.
“The front nine is significantly shorter, so I had some wedges into the greens there and stuck a few shots close, then made the putts,” said Stoll. “I think [the course] sets up to my eye pretty well. I play a fade off the tee and there’s quite a few shots I can take off the left side. I grew up in Portland, and the greens are really similar to the pacific northwest and catch my eye.”
On the “Road to the LPGA” in 2021, Stoll owns a solo third result at the Casino Del Sol Golf Classic and four additional top-25 finishes. Currently No. 27 in the Race for the Card, she has missed two of the last three cuts and hoping this round kickstarts a turnaround.
“It was definitely a round I needed to have. I have been, not struggling, but not where I wanted to be the last few weeks, to get a good round under my belt feels really good,” said Stoll. “I missed the cut last week, and I actually took a flight out the next morning to Minnesota to see my coach. I was over there for a couple of days and had a lot of really good conversations with her on where my focus is going forward, and I think that is going to help me a lot along the way.”
