Former Florida State University Seminole Mirabel Ting is off to a solid start after round one of the Final Qualifying portion of the 2025 LPGA Qualifying Series

Ting, who was one of the two co-medalists at Qualifying in October alongside Kokona Sakurai, carded a 3-under 69 in the first round at Magnolia Grove – RTJ Golf Trail, 18 holes of golf that were pushed back one day due to unplayable course conditions.

Teeing it up on the Crossings Course, the Malaysian got off to a bit of a slow start, carding a bogey on the par-3 2nd hole to drop to 1-over almost immediately. But Ting recovered in a hurry with a flurry of four consecutive birdies on her next four holes to climb to 3-under, which is where she finished after parring in from No. 7 onward.

While she is five strokes behind Canada’s Leah John, who opened her week in Mobile, Ala. with an 8-under 64 on the Crossings Course, Ting is currently tied for 10th and well inside the top 25 on the leaderboard early, a position she will need to maintain if she wants to earn her LPGA Tour card come the conclusion of the 90-hole tournament on Tuesday.

“I had a decent round today,” said Ting. “I didn't play my best, but definitely, we'll take it for today. Especially because it's kinda gloomy, and it's cold. So, I'm just gonna keep doing what I'm doing on the golf course.”

Ting was a standout at FSU in her three seasons as a Seminole, earning virtually every accolade available to a female collegiate golfer. She was named a 2025 All-American by both the WGCA and Golfweek, won the 2025 ANNIKA Award presented by Stifel, earned 2025 WGCA Division I PING Player of the Year honors, was named the 2025 ACC Golfer of the Year and represented the International Team three times in the Arnold Palmer Cup (2023, 2024, 2025).

The now 20-year-old decided to forgo her final year of college and turn professional earlier this season, announcing those plans via a letter on her social media platforms on July 3. Ting made her professional debut at The Amundi Evian Championship in Evian-les-Bains, France, what was then just her second-ever start in an LPGA Tour event. She has since competed in the 2025 Maybank Championship at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in her home country, ultimately finishing in a tie for 49th.

This year marked the first season that Ting has elected to compete in any leg of Final Qualifying, and after tying for first at the Qualifying Stage a couple of months ago, her confidence was sure to be high entering an uncertain week in Lower Alabama. But the challenges that can crop up throughout the course of a five-round tournament – from weather to fatigue to pressure – can abound, and one of those reared its head on Thursday, as the first round was postponed due to inclement weather that rendered the course unplayable.

Ting took the delay of play in stride, however, enjoying some bonus rest and relaxation during a week that can be as stressful as they come for any athlete in the field.

“It doesn't make much of a difference because we hadn't started,” Ting said when asked about the postponement. “It was just a long day yesterday, and it was good that they called it around 10 (a.m.) so we could just get back home and rest. I was home. I was just watching Netflix and chilling out. I did some cooking. Had an hour drive down to have some Korean food and traveling back here.”

That unexpected off day clearly put Ting in a calm state of mind on Friday, as evidenced by her 69, and she will be working to build on that strong early showing over the next four rounds in Mobile, Ala. as she looks to secure one of the LPGA Tour cards that will be awarded to the top 25 and ties at the conclusion of Final Qualifying early next week.

“Hopefully, no more rain,” Ting said when asked what she would be carrying forward from the first 18 holes. “I'm just gonna go back and do the same thing as what I did yesterday and chill out and worry about it tomorrow.”
