The second round of the Island Resort Championship resumed at 7:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, with just under half of the 144-player field left on the course. Epson Tour veteran, Sophia Schubert, was the leader in the clubhouse but knew there would be low scores that would pass her at 6-under by the end of the round.

The overnight suspension, which was due to darkness, benefited some athletes, with some of the lowest scores of the week coming out of the resumption on Sunday morning. Amari Avery posted a 4-under, 68 to take the solo lead, which was threatened throughout the remainder of the round but was never tied. With the final round still looming, Avery’s game plan is to continue competing with herself.

“I was talking to (my sports psychologist) a couple of days ago, and he was telling me to be really competitive with myself,” said Avery. “I talked to him yesterday after the round, and obviously, he saw that I was in the lead still. So he was telling me this is odd. It's not normal to take a whole night off and then come back super early in the morning. But like we said, just keep staying competitive with myself, don't worry about others, and keep hitting the shots I know how to hit.”

The 21-year-old was almost bogey-free, but she closed out her round with a bogey, due to a errant tee shot into the water on No. 9. Despite the blip on her scorecard, Avery is feeling good about her game, minimizing mistakes as much as possible. The bogey even gives her some revenge to look forward to during the final round.

“It's okay to make mistakes, and as long as I recover as efficiently as possible, I think that's a good thing,” said Avery. “But it gives me a sense of urgency for the next round, knowing that I'm still in the lead, I'm still playing really great golf, and it's okay to make mistakes.”

Three players share second place, just one shot back of Avery, making for an interesting Sunday afternoon. Kate Smith-Stroh and Jillian Hollis make up the final group with Avery, while Sarah White is in the penultimate group. All three players shot under-par rounds to continue climbing up the leaderboard on Moving Day, but Smith-Stroh set herself apart, carding the round of the day with a bogey-free 8-under.

“I felt really good,” said Smith-Stroh. “I haven't really gone low in a while, so it was just nice to kind of see some of the things I've been working on pay off and had a great group. The course was in great shape, so it's just a fun couple days of golf.”

The final round begins at 11 a.m. local time on Sunday, with the leaders going off Sweetgrass Golf Club’s 1st at 1:12 p.m.
