Every week, each player’s goal is to win the event they are entered in, but sometimes the goals change as the weekend goes on. When you can’t win, making the cut is the next important goal for a player. A made cut ensures a paycheck and a chance to make your way further up the leaderboard. Making cuts is not as easy as it seems; only eight players on the PGA TOUR have made double-digit cuts in a row, with the current consecutive cuts’ leader being Xander Schauffele, with 33 consecutive cuts made.
Now, moving over to the Epson Tour, Robyn Choi is on an impressive streak. Choi has yet to miss a cut in an Epson Tour event during the 2023 season, playing in 20 so far and heading into her 21st. Her streak extends past this season, with Choi making the cut in her last six events on the Epson Tour in 2022, pushing her consecutive cut streak to 26 tournaments.
“Out here, every single dollar is very important, so I am just trying to make the cut every week,” explained Choi. “To get into the top 10, you need to try and get every dollar you can. If I had a bad round, I had to remind myself it wasn’t over and I can still make my way up the leaderboard. Obviously, I don’t have a win this year, but I have given myself a few good chances. The goal was to have a win this year, but at the end of the day, the top 10 is my ultimate goal, and I am really close to that.”
Choi is No. 11 in the Race for the Card standings, only $200 behind the No. 10 spot, and with a solo 60th-place finish or better, she has a chance at getting her LPGA Tour card for the 2024 season. The 25-year-old joined the Epson Tour in 2019 and has been knocking on the door of the top 10 several times since 2019, finishing No. 13 in 2020, No. 25 in 2021, and No. 17 in 2022. Choi has been in this situation before but is now focused on her game and what she can control.
“It is definitely a grind,” said Choi. “A lot of the season, you are just grinding it out there, trying to put together a good score. If I just have one more good week like I did in Arkansas, I can really jump up the standings. I am just focused on playing more good golf and seeing what I can do at the Tour Championship.”
