This week’s field at the Island Resort Championship features four familiar names and faces. Four past champions will tee it up in Harris, Michigan – some who return for the first time since their victory. Daniela Iacobelli, Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong, Dani Holmqvist and Kim Kaufman look to be victorious once again and become the first player to win twice at Sweetgrass Golf Club.
Iacobelli, the 2019 champion, has a nostalgic confidence and comfortability heading into the weekend, but doesn’t let the past foreshadow her future, knowing her game can go either way. She calls the week she won a blur, saying that things went right and fell into place. After seven appearances at Sweetgrass Golf Club, Iacobelli knows where to put the ball.
“Obviously I know I’m capable out here,” said Iacobelli. “When everything’s going your way, it’s going your way. That’s how that week was. It can easily happen out here, but the opposite also can.”
2016 champion, Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong, returns to the Island Club for the first time since her win. The Thai says she likes the course and the condition it’s in for this week’s event. She says being a past champion does not affect her mindset as she’s trying to prioritize having fun on the course.
“I’m just having fun every week,” said Santiwiwatthanaphong. “But it does feel a little special to come back.”
Seven years later, 2015 champion, Dani Holmqvist also makes her way back to Harris, Michigan. Holmqvist has dual status on the Epson Tour and LPGA Tour but has been primarily playing on the LPGA Tour since her win in 2015.
