Lilia Vu (Fountain Valley, California) found five birdies this afternoon on El Campeon in the first round to take her into tomorrow one-stroke back from the lead. Vu is tied with Leslie Cloots and Hexi Yuan at 3-under going into Saturday.
“I feel really good, even though I didn’t hit as many fairways as I would have liked so the fact that I started well really helped,” said Vu. “This course is definitely difficult. You have to have a cut off the tee and a draw. You can’t really have just one, so that makes it really challenging and I think it’s going to be even more challenging throughout the week.”
Vu is currently No. 3 in the “Race for the Card” thanks to a win at the Garden City Charity Classic. After claiming her first Epson Tour victory, she shared with us part of her tournament routine, reading. That week she was reading Lynn and Pia’s Be A Player, The Golf Mystic by Gary Battersby and Extraordinary Golf by Fred Shoemaker.
“I actually went to Barnes & Noble last week and bought three extra books and am definitely continuing to read golf books during the tournament weeks,” said Vu.
