LPGA Epson Tour returns to Rochester This Summer at Brook-Lea Country Club

Women’s pro golf tournament supports local youth while remembering a legacy

ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 16, 2016 — Continuing the 40-year tradition of championing professional women’s golf in Rochester, the LPGA Epson Tour returns to Brook-Lea Country Club July 11-17 for the Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic.

For a second year, the Epson Tour— the only tour where top players automatically graduate to the LPGA— will bring the best up and coming talent in ladies’ golf to Rochester. The tournament and concurrent events are expected to tee up one of the largest purses in the Epson Tour. Following a Pro-Am format, high school golfers get the chance to play side-by-side with the pros.

Mike Vadala, tournament chairman and president/CEO of The Summit Federal Credit Union says the Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic is more than golf. “It’s about bringing the community together to make a difference in our young people’s lives, enabling them to pursue their career goals,” Vadala said. “It just so happens we get to do so with the game of golf.”

The Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection program benefits from the tournament. Yet what brings Epson together with Rochester and Brook-Lea Country Club is a love of golf, community and empowering women to achieve their goals—qualities shared by the tournament’s namesake, Danielle Downey, who tragically died in 2014.

“There’s no better way to celebrate Danielle’s life,” said Tessa Teachman, LPGA player and Webster native. “She mentored me and so many other young women golfers. I think she would be smiling knowing her legacy lives on through the game and this tournament.”
