Tournament continues 40-year tradition of professional women’s golf

ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 26, 2016 — When the Epson Tour makes its stop in Rochester July 11-17 for the Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic, not only will up-and-coming talent in professional ladies golf play for a good cause, but they can earn their share of $200,000 in prize money—the 3rd largest purse on the tour.

“This is a huge jump in purse for a second year event, but we know that Rochester is always a favorite of the players, and has been for forty years with the LPGA and now the LPGA Epson Tour,” said Mike Vadala, tournament chairman and president/CEO of The Summit Federal Credit Union. “We want our purse to represent our commitment to the players and to the tour, and let them know that Rochester is still the best women’s professional golf town in America.”

That sentiment holds true with one of the tour’s most popular and well-known players, Madison Pressel. “I always look forward to golfing in Rochester,” said Pressel, a third-year Epson Tour player. “This tournament has a different vibe than most others. It feels more personal and you can really tell that people from Rochester are passionate about their community and the game of golf.”

Brook-Lea Country Club will host the week-long event, where attendees and players can look forward to:

• Supporting a good cause: The tournament benefits the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection (helps area students overcome barriers so they can graduate and pursue their career goals) and the Danielle Downey Scholarship (recipient receives $2,500 for their education and an additional $2,500 to donate to a local charity of choice).

• The qualifier event: Allows local women who compete in the Rochester District Golf Association Stroke Play Championship a chance to play in the Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic.

• Pro-Am format: Golfers of all levels can play side-by-side with some of the best women golfers in the world. Pro-Am guests and sponsors get to meet and greet with their professional player partner at a special reception on Tuesday evening.

• Meeting future LPGA players: Known as “the road to the LPGA,” the ten top players on the Epson Tour automatically graduate to the LPGA each year, bringing the best up-and-coming players in professional women’s golf to the area. The Epson Tour is the only tour with a direct and automatic link to the LPGA.
