The Path to Becoming a LPGA Player

When Becca Huffer attended Notre Dame, little did she know but her major, Industrial Design, would suit the goal of becoming a professional golfer. The intensive study focused on improving the design of a product for consumers.

“Making any product design better – anything and everything –whether it be cars, shoes, water bottles, whatever,” said Huffer, 24, a 2012 graduate from the South Bend, Ind., university. “There was a big emphasis on finding ways to improve everyday things. I really enjoyed that process.”

That focus is now solely on making her way as a professional golfer following years of diversifying her sports and sharing time with her academic load. The design is a path to becoming a LPGA player, which goes to the top 10 players at the end of this season on the Epson Tour.

At 5-foot-11 growing up in Denver, Huffer played basketball, soccer, softball and skied when golf wasn’t available in the winter. She was voted 2008 Colorado High School Athlete of the Year and chose Notre Dame because of its academics, improving golf program and her mother, Mary (a member of Notre Dame’s first women’s varsity tennis team) and older brother attended there. So golf wasn’t the be-all, end-all.

“The joke was I never liked to practice, even in college,” Huffer said. “I have really had to learn to like practicing. The last few years I have really learned how to compete.”

Continuing to work with Denver-based instructor Ron Lowry, her coach since age 8, has steadied her ascent. Winning in college and on lesser professional tours has helped her confidence. A right wrist injury in 2013 slowed the progress. This year marks her first full season on the Epson Tour after playing 14 events in 2014.

Things started quickly this season when Huffer tied for fourth at the season-opening Gateway Classic in Arizona, her winter base. Even though she missed the cut the second week at the Volvik Championship, she made a hole in one on the 17^th hole in the second round. Prior to the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic, she entered ranked 14^th on the money list and was paired on Friday with Katie Kempter, the winner of the Volvik Championship.

“This year I really want to make more birdies,” Huffer said. “That separates who wins and who finishes 20^th.”

For Huffer, it’s another step in the design of a professional golf career.
