CITY OF INDUSTRY, CALIFORNIA - The 2014 Epson Tour, the official Road to the LPGA, makes its way to Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort (Eisenhower Course) for the second-annual Volvik Championship from Feb. 28-March 2. It’s the second of 20 events on tour this season.

The Epson Tour is back in the state of California for the first time since 2001.

The star-studded field of 120 players, 18 of which hail from The Golden State, will compete over three days for a total purse of $100,000 with the winner’s share set at $15,000.

“We are proud to once again partner with Volvik in showcasing the next generation of LPGA stars at the Volvik Championship,” said Mike Nichols, Chief Business Officer of the Epson Tour. “Additionally, returning to Industry Hills where the LPGA once played in front of large crowds is sure to create an exciting week of golf for sponsors and fans.”

This year’s Volvik Championship field features high profile names like Cheyenne Woods, the niece of 79-time PGA Tour winner Tiger Woods and Birdie Kim, who won the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open.

The field also includes three former UCLA golfers, Stephanie Kono, Lee Lopez and Brianna Do. Kono qualified twice as an amateur for the U.S. Women’s Open at Pacific Palms Resort.

“I’m really excited, I played the course a couple times for the Open qualifier and it’s really nice to be able to sleep in my own bed and play a tournament,” said Kono, who currently lives in Irvine. “I have some good memories of the course since I qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open twice on that course.”

The Volvik Race for the Card is underway with Marissa Steen of West Chester, Ohio at the top of the money list after one event. Steen had a 54-hole score of 10-under-par at the Visit Mesa Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club and finished in second place. Alena Sharp, who has status on the LPGA Tour and is not full-time on the Epson Tour, won the event at 12-under.

Last year, the inaugural Volvik Championship was held during the third week of September at the Reunion Resort – Palmer Course in Orlando. Hannah Yun, a San Diego native, captured the title at 14-under-par. The former University of Florida golfer is in the field and aiming to repeat.

Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort hosted the top LPGA Tour players in 2011 when the Kia Classic was contested in City of Industry. Sandra Gal shot a 16-under for the tournament to capture the Kia Classic.

Big Break NFL winner Emily Talley, who shot a tournament-best 7-under 65 on Sunday at the Visit Mesa Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club to finish in a four-way tie for third place is eager to head to California for event number two.

“I’ve got good mojo going and I’m excited there is another tournament right now.”
