LONGWOOD, FLORIDA, March 27, 2014 – The Epson Tour, the official Road to the LPGA, is in Central Florida for the second-annual IOA Golf Classic at Alaqua Country Club. First-round play begins on Friday, March 28.

The field of 144 players will be competing for a total purse of $100,000.

Seven of the top-10 on the Volvik Race for the Card money list are in the field this week at the IOA Golf Classic. Below is a look at the current Volvik Race for the Card money list.

Amongst the many local connections in the field is Joanna Coe, who played college golf at Rollins College. Below is a Q&A with Coe conducted this Tuesday.

Question: What’s it like to play in a tournament near where you live?
Coe: It’s always nice to sleep in your own bed and be close to Rollins so gives me a good feeling to be near my college and hopefully I have some people come out and watch.

Question: What do you remember most about your time at Rollins?
Coe: My freshman year was probably my most memorable, when we won the DII national championship and then I won it as an individual with four seniors so it was just a special year. I just had a great time at Rollins. The golf team is amazing; there is a strong history of women’s golfers that came out of Rollins. My coach was great, I loved my teammates and it was just a great fit for me athletically and academically.

Question: You played at Alaqua Country Club when you were at Rollins, what do you remember about the course?
Coe: We played sophomore and junior year here. We hosted a tournament at Alaqua Country Club. I remember it being tight and tricky but I haven’t played it since. I do remember this course because we went to Hawaii went after for spring break to play in a tournament. I remember coach telling us in the parking lot that we weren’t going to another tournament, we were going to Hawaii.

Question: How much will the support from friends, family and teammates help?
Coe: It’s always nice to see familiar faces. You’re alone a lot on the road so it’s nice to be in Florida and be around this environment. My coach (from Rollins) is coming Friday; I think they leave Saturday or Sunday for their own tournament, but it’s always great to see them.

Question: What do you need to do this weekend to have success?
Coe: I need to keep it in play here. It’s going to be tough off the tee, I am probably going to have to club down a lot and try not to be too aggressive off the tee. I am going to try to stay really patient with putting, last week I got a little antsy and I wasn’t really finishing my strokes. I’m hoping to make more putts and hit it like I did in Arizona (at the Visit Mesa Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club).

PRO-AM TO BENEFIT OVARIAN CANCER NATIONAL ALLIANCE: The pro-am on Thursday at Alaqua Country Club will benefit the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA). It’s also “Teal it Up” Thursday where professional and amateurs will wear teal colors to show support for the mission of the OCNA.

Funds raised by the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance Pro Am will go to the organization’s mission of supporting women and men who are affected by ovarian cancer. The Alliance serves as a voice for this community, educates the public about this deadly disease and provides support services to women who are diagnosed.

The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance Pro Am will also serve as the kickoff event on the road leading to the Joan Kidd, MD Ovarian Cancer Awareness Cup, a year-long competition offered in conjunction with the Alliance. The Joan Kidd, MD Ovarian Cancer Awareness Cup culminates in a National Finals tournament to be held in January 2015. To qualify for the National Finals, golfers can visit www.ovariancancer.org/golf starting April 1, 2014 to register and post a score from a qualifying round of golf at their local club. The top 132 players in the singles competition, low net and the top 66 mixed couple teams (low net best ball) will qualify for the National Finals.

EPSON TOUR PLAYERS TO ORLANDO SOLAR BEARS HOCKEY: Seven Epson Tour players – Emily Talley, Selanee Henderson, Maiya Tanaka, Samantha Richdale, Dawn Shockley, Jackie Stoelting and Taylor Collins – made an appearance at the Orlando Solar Bears hockey game on Wednesday at Amway Center.

The players participated in a putting contest on the ice during the first intermission and other promotions throughout the night.

Solar Bears players will be at Alaqua Country Club on Sunday to watch the final round of the IOA Golf Classic.
