Leading up to the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open, epsontour.com will highlight Epson Tour players that have qualified for the event at Pinehurst #2. The Open will be played from June 19-22.
DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA, May 28, 2014 – Epson Tour member Caroline Powers shot a career-low 7-under 65 on her second 18 holes on May 27 to qualify for her second U.S. Women’s Open.
She won the Massachusetts qualifier by shooting a 71-65 over the 36 holes.
Powers has made the cut in seven of nine Epson Tour events this season with one top-10 finish at the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic (8th).
She is in her second season on Tour after graduating from Michigan State in 2013.
The Bowling Green, Ohio native was a three-time MSU Female Athlete of the Year and a four-time Academic All-American.
Tour: What was your reaction when you realized you qualified?
Powers: I was really excited when I finished after playing such a solid second 18 holes, but since there were some low scores still on the course I wasn't sure if it would be enough. Once everyone was in and my scores held up, I was relieved to know I achieved my goal for the day and get another chance to compete in the Open.
Tour: What are you looking forward to most?
Powers: I have never been to Pinehurst so I am extremely excited just to see the place and get to play #2. After missing the cut last year by two shots, I am also looking forward to being back in competition with the best players in the world and hopefully get some redemption!
Tour: Anyone you’d like to play with?
Powers: I would love to play with Suzann Petterson. I have heard she is really great and I like her style of play. There are so many awesome people out there though, so there are lots of good options.
Tour: Have you played in the U.S. Open before?
Powers: This will be my second year -- I was fortunate to play last year as well. I have tried to qualify three times total. Playing in the US Open is pretty special and not guaranteed, so you need to soak it up when the opportunity comes.
Tour: Has it always been a dream to play in the U.S. Open?
Powers: It has been a dream of mine to play in the US Open. It is the ultimate tournament for women's golf and to get the chance to compete is the first step of the dream. To play well and post some low numbers is also another, so we will see what unfolds this year!
